All this year, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption by voice-vote on July 4, 1776 of the final wording of the Declaration of Independence. A month later, they began to sign this document, which was like signing their death warrants. On August 1, 1776, at Independence Hall, Samuel Adams, who was the prime mover behind the whole push for American independence in the first place, gave a speech. He declared, “We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom alone ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven. From the rising to the setting sun, may His kingdom come.” And so, on August 2, 1776, beginning with John Hancock, the president of the Congress that produced the document, became the first to sign it. Followed by the others, as many as were able to travel back to Philadelphia. In August 2026, the 250th anniversary of the signing, there was a special webinar to signify a recommitment to the principles contained in the Declaration.
