When you bring up the notion that America began as a Christian nation, critics are quick to bring up slavery. However, slavery wasn’t unique to America. It is as old as recorded history. The founders grappled with the issue of slavery and decided that it was best to unite the country first. They outlawed the slave trade within 20 years of putting the Constitution into effect. But, it was not until Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War that this great evil was finally uprooted in America.
