All this year we are celebrating America at 250. That’s because July 4, 2026 was the 250th anniversary of the acceptance by voice-vote of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress. It was to be signed later. The Declaration explains WHY we exist as a nation. We are to be ruled by the consent of the governed. And we have our rights because they have been endowed by the Creator. 11 years after that document was approved, the founding fathers wrote up the Constitution, which was signed on September 17, 1787. The Constitution explains the HOW our government is to operate. But the Constitution was absolutely predicated on the Declaration of Independence. Historian Jane Hampton Cook has worked in the White House and has written books on American history for adults and children.
