Podcast with Mark Beliles on Jefferson’s View of God at the Time of the Declaration

Topic: Did Jefferson Believe in the Christian God?

When the founders wrote the Declaration of Independence, they said that our rights come from the Creator, that is, God. Thomas Jefferson was the author of the first draft of the Declaration. It then went through more than 80 revisions. We know Jefferson was not always orthodox in his religious views, especially later in life. When Jefferson referred to God, did he mean the God of the Bible? The Christian God? Dr. Mark Beliles and Dr. Jerry Newcombe wrote a book on the faith or lack thereof of Jefferson, entitled, Doubting Thomas. Dr. Mark Beliles joins Jerry Newcombe to discuss Jefferson’s view of God—especially when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. www.doubtingthomasbook.com
