In our time, the history books have been rewritten, and our Judeo-Christian heritage has been erased. This has frightening implications as we continue to see riots in the streets of America, and open rebellion toward the rule of law in general and law-enforcement in particular. Ultimately, our future is at stake.
Tragically, millions of Americans are clueless about our nation’s true history. Even humorous, man-on-the- street surveys uncover an astounding level of ignorance. Also, many people today view America as hopelessly racist and flawed from its very inception. They desire to tear down America as constructed by the founding fathers and remake it, essentially in a Marxist way.
Oppression, tyranny, slavery, and despotism have been the norm throughout human history. The founders of this nation sought to rise above that norm, risking their very lives and everything dear to them, to forge an entirely new form of government, one based squarely on Biblical principles and ideals, that all men are created equal.
Before 1776, no nation in the history of the world had been founded on a single idea: that human beings do not get their rights from the government, but they get their rights from God.
This concept is not only the cornerstone of the Declaration of Independence, but the Constitution itself, for if individuals get their rights from God not the state, then the government must serve the people, not the people serve the government. That is why Lincoln called it “a government of the people, by the people and for the people.” The entire system of checks and balances in our constitution is based on a Biblical understanding of human nature. As Madison put, “If men were angels, no government would be necessary.”
Abraham Lincoln understood this when, exactly a century earlier, a century before the Civil Rights movement, he called America “the last best hope of earth.” At Gettysburg, standing at the graves of thousands of men, he implored the nation to not let the war be in vain, and to not let this experiment perish from the world. Yet, far too many of our citizens today could not defend or even explain what Lincoln meant in calling America “the last best hope of earth.”
The Foundation of American Liberty is a new multiple-part film series being produced by Dr. Jerry Newcombe for Providence Forum (a division of D. James Kennedy Ministries), geared toward telling the story of America, with a specific focus on the origin of the ideas on which it was built.

Program I. The Pilgrims
Though small in number, they cast a long and positive shadow; every Thanksgiving is an annual reminder of our nation’s Judeo-Christian roots. Here is a copy of the first special.

Program II. A City on a Hill
Basing everything on the Word of God, the Puritans created positive developments in law, culture, and education that are still with us. Rev. Roger Williams and Quaker William Penn created havens for conscience sake.
Program III. The Beginning of Wisdom
The working title of this episode says it all: The Bible and Education. All the Ivy League schools, Harvard, Princeton, and others were Christian; education for the masses was a Christian invention. The founding fathers knew the Bible, as one scholar noted, “down to their fingertips.” The Scriptures say, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Program IV. The Road to Independence
The Great Awakening was one of the first major events that began the process culminating in American independence. The clergy played a great role in promoting independence and resistance to building tyranny, which ultimately led to America’s break with England. The founders diligently sought to follow the rule of law. Independence was not their goal, but in following the rule of law, it became their destiny.
Program V. George Washington, Father of Our Country
No one individual did more to help give birth to the United States of America than did George Washington, our first president under the Constitution. Throughout his life, he was providentially spared to serve, and he recognized God’s hand in the founding of the nation.
Program VI. Endowed by the Creator
Our rights come from God, so declares our nation’s birth certificate, the Declaration of Independence. It is a beautiful document. But is essentially a brilliant copy-and-paste job from Christian sources, e.g., the Mecklenburg Declaration of 1775, the writings of Blackstone, John Locke, etc. Included in this episode is the contrast between the godless French Revolution with the pro-God American War for Independence and the founders’ vision that there would be no separation of God and government.
Program VII. We the People
The biblical concept of covenants gave rise to our two key founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The Mayflower Compact began this process. But the Constitution applies to all Americans—thus we deal with the problem of slavery and mistreatment of the Indians.
